With numerous upcoming projects in the making, Sri Lanka’s Water and Wastewater Industry is set to be boosted to greater heights. One of the many projects currently in progress is a new water treatment plant with pipelines. The project will be funded by the UniCredit Bank of Austria that has agreed to provide 61 million Euro (about RS11, 285 million) in loans to support the project.
The water treatment plant, built under the Kirama Katuwana Water Supply Project in Colombo district, will supply drinking water to around 31,000 people in the Divisional Secretariat areas of Katuwana and Walasmulla, and semi urban communities. Whereas the new pipelines will be under the project, Augmentation of Water Pipelines along with the Orugodawatta-Ambatale Road Development Project. The project will shift the more than 100-year old water pipelines into the utility corridor of the Road which is being constructed.

Furthermore, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has advised the Sri Lankan authorities to extend a water quality monitoring project to other key water bodies. The JICA funded three-year project in Sri Lanka is purposed to improve the water quality monitoring of the Kelani River and to strengthen the enforcement capacity of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA). As the project comes to an end in March 2018, JICA added on in a statement that it was now time for Sri Lanka to expand the water quality monitoring model used for the Kelani River to other major water bodies in the island.
